A Meta-analysis of Ecosystem Sservices Associated with Wetlands in Usfws National Wildlife Refuges

چکیده
We conduct a novel meta-analysis of ecosystem service economic valuation results restricted to wetlands of the contiguous US. We focus our analysis on the estimation of benefits that wetlands contribute to water quality and flood and storm protection services. We developed a new statistical approach to enhance the accuracy and flexibility of our meta-analysis while maintaining a systematic approach. Using the new modeling method and the new domestic-oriented wetland valuation database, we estimate ecosystem service values at four case study National Wildlife Refuges.

Habitat Selection and Activities of Dabbling Ducks during Non-Breeding Periods
Western Tennessee is an important region for waterfowl during non-breeding periods, supporting >40% of the Mississippi Flyway population of American black ducks (Anas rubripes). Understanding habitat selection and activities of waterfowl during the non-breeding period is important for directed habitat management on national wildlife refuges and in other wetlands important in meeting regional wa...
متن کاملA socio-economic-ecological simulation model of land acquisition to expand a national wildlife refuge
Land acquisition is a common practice for establishing and expanding protected areas such as wildlife refuges. However, the socioeconomic feasibility and ecological consequences of an acquisition project are rarely assessed before the project is executed. In this paper, a socio-economic-ecological model (SEELAND) was developed to simulate the socioeconomic feasibility and ecological consequence...
متن کاملAgricultural conservation practices and wetland ecosystem services in the wetland-rich Piedmont-Coastal Plain region
In the eastern U.S. Coastal Plain and Piedmont region, diverse inland wetlands (riverine, depressional, wet flats) have been impacted by or converted to agriculture. Farm Bill conservation practices that restore or enhance wetlands can return their ecological functions and services to the agricultural landscape. We review the extent of regional knowledge regarding the effectiveness of these con...
متن کاملCarbon Sequestration in Tidal Salt Marshes of the Northeast United States.
Tidal salt marshes provide important ecological services, habitat, disturbance regulation, water quality improvement, and biodiversity, as well as accumulation and sequestration of carbon dioxide (CO2) in vegetation and soil organic matter. Different management practices may alter their capacity to provide these ecosystem services. We examined soil properties (bulk density, percent organic C, p...
متن کاملCommunity structure of fishes inhabiting aquatic refuges in a threatened Karst wetland and its implications for ecosystem management
We illustrate the importance of subsurface refuges for conservation of aquatic fauna with our studies of karstic wetlands in Everglades National Park, Florida, USA. Managers have proposed that water levels there should not fall more than 46 cm below ground level for more than 90 days annually. In four areas, 84% of solution holes were less than 46 cm deep and holes deeper than 1m were rare (<3 ...
